Join us for a wonderful seven-day summer holiday to one of our favourite UK coastal destinations – beautiful Torquay!
With a welcoming hotel, excellent leisure facilities and a varied programme of excursions across Devon and Cornwall, this holiday offers the perfect mix of sightseeing, seaside relaxation and traditional summer fun.
Departing South Wales, we make our way south-west, with a suitable lunchtime stop en route, before arriving in Torquay during the afternoon.
Our home for the next six nights is the popular TLH Derwent Hotel, located less than a five-minute walk from the seafront. This lively and welcoming hotel offers comfortable en-suite bedrooms, each equipped with a television, telephone and tea and coffee-making facilities. Most bedrooms can be reached by lift.
The hotel boasts an impressive range of leisure facilities, including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a gym, sauna, steam room and hot tub. There is also a games area featuring ten-pin bowling, pool and table tennis. In the evenings, the Starlight Bar hosts a varied programme of cabaret, live music and entertainment.
Torquay itself is a fantastic holiday destination, with plenty to see and do. The beach, promenade and marina are all within easy reach, while boat trips and ferries regularly sail across the bay to destinations including Brixham. The waterfront is lined with cafés, bars and restaurants, making it the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy the seaside atmosphere.
The town also offers a good selection of traditional shops, and with the land train stopping close to the hotel, exploring Torquay couldn’t be easier.
This morning, we visit the traditional seaside town of Dawlish, famous for its resident black swans. You may wish to stroll beside Dawlish Water, browse the shops and amusement arcades or simply relax and watch the trains pass along the scenic coastal railway line.
We then continue to nearby Teignmouth, an attractive Georgian seaside town situated where the River Teign meets the sea. With its promenade, pier, independent shops and excellent selection of cafés, it’s a lovely place to enjoy an early lunch or perhaps indulge in a traditional Devon cream tea.
We return via a scenic coastal route, arriving back along Torquay seafront. You may choose to leave the coach here for a little more time exploring or continue directly back to the hotel to relax.
Today we venture across the River Tamar and into Cornwall for a full day exploring two of the county’s best-loved coastal destinations.
Our first stop is Polperro, a picture-postcard fishing village filled with character and charm. Its narrow, winding streets are lined with independent shops selling local arts and crafts, jewellery, gifts and, of course, traditional Cornish pasties. Follow the lanes down towards the harbour, where colourful fishing boats sit against a backdrop of whitewashed cottages.
We then continue to Looe, a lively seaside town divided by the river and linked by its distinctive bridge. Looe is well known for its working harbour and fresh local seafood, making it an excellent place to treat yourself to some traditional fish and chips while watching the boats come and go.
Mobility Advice: Please be aware that this excursion involves a reasonable amount of walking. Due to the narrow roads and restricted coach access in parts of Looe and Polperro, the coach may be required to set down and pick up outside the town centres. Passengers should therefore be comfortable walking some distance, which may include slopes and uneven surfaces. We recommend that customers with limited mobility consider whether this excursion will be suitable for their individual needs.
Today we visit Dartmouth, one of Devon’s most attractive and historic riverside towns.
Situated at the mouth of the River Dart, Dartmouth is filled with beautiful buildings, independent shops and waterside cafés. You’ll have time to explore at your own pace, perhaps enjoying some local ice cream, fudge or fish and chips.
For a different view of the town, you may choose to take one of the regular river cruises, offering wonderful views of the harbour, surrounding countryside and historic landmarks.
On our return journey, there will be the option to leave the coach in Paignton, allowing you to enjoy some additional time beside the sea before making your own way back to Torquay.
Today we travel to Exmouth, a vibrant seaside town situated where the River Exe meets the sea.
Reputed to be one of Britain’s oldest seaside resorts, Exmouth boasts two miles of golden sand, a spacious promenade and plenty of cafés and shops. There will be time to enjoy a gentle seaside stroll and explore the town before our included afternoon cruise.
We then board our boat for a relaxing journey along the calm, sheltered waters of the River Exe. Sit back and admire the scenery while enjoying a delicious Devon cream tea, complete with a scone, generous helpings of clotted cream and strawberry jam, accompanied by freshly brewed tea or coffee.
Today is yours to enjoy Torquay at leisure.
You may wish to relax beside the sea, explore the harbour and marina, browse the shops or enjoy lunch in one of the many waterfront cafés and restaurants.
For an easy and enjoyable way to see more of the resort, why not take a ride on the land train, which stops close to the hotel? Alternatively, you could take a boat trip across the bay, visit nearby Brixham or simply make the most of the hotel’s excellent leisure facilities.
After breakfast, we check out of the hotel and begin our journey home.
Subject to suitable weather and traffic conditions, we plan to stop in Weston-super-Mare, giving you the chance to enjoy one final visit to the seaside. Take a stroll along the promenade, visit the Grand Pier or enjoy lunch overlooking the beach before we continue across the Severn and return to South Wales.
We have a number of pick up points available for this break as shown below...
