Day One
Departing South Wales, we head North, taking a break along the way before arriving at the Four Oaks hotel on Llandudno’s North shore promenade.
Day Two – Beaumaris & Llanfairpwllgwyngyll
This morning we pop over the Menai Strait and on to the island of Anglesey, with our first port of call, Beaumaris. Dominated by Edwards' unfinished castle, this small town boasts majestic views over the Menai Strait and back to the mainland. From here we head to the longest place name in the country, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, for a coffee stop before returning for the rest of the afternoon in Llandudno.
Day Three – Portmeirion (entry included)
Today, we venture further for a visit to the enchanting Italianate-style village of Portmeirion.
Created by the Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925 to 1976 to show how a naturally beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it. Using an eco-friendly approach, he designed his architectural vision around a Mediterranean piazza. Endangered buildings and unwanted artefacts from all over the globe were transported and rebuilt to create a nest of loggias, grand porticoes and tiny terracotta-roofed houses, painted in bright colours.
Portmeirion village and gardens are one of Wales' premier visitor attractions and a fabulous place to explore!
Day Four - Porthmadog & Bleanau Festiniog - via the Ffestinog Heritage Railway (entry included)
Today we head to the harbour town of Portmadog, which lies on the Glaslyn estuary. From here we'll take a one-way train ride to Blaenau Ffestiniog on the Ffestiniog Heritage Railway. During your journey, look out for the changing scenery as the train crosses the estuary along the Cob embankment, before climbing up the valley through pastures and villages, and then entering the ancient wooded slopes of the valley side. On leaving picturesque Tan-y-Bwlch station, the train leaves the trees behind as it clings to the valley side. After rounding the spiral at Dduallt and passing through the tunnel, the train emerges beside Llyn Ystradau reservoir and the slate tips beckon. Each section has its fascinating story, and your journey is greatly enhanced by the Traveller’s Guide, which features an open-out map and a line guide to help you follow the route.
The coach will be there to meet you upon arrival in Blaenau Ffestiniog, allowing you some time to explore before returning to the hotel.
Day Five – Free in Llandudno
Enjoy a day at leisure in Llandudno, with the option to relax in the hotel or explore the surrounding area. Take a stroll along the seafront and pier, take a look around the town, or even take a ride on the historic Great Orme tramway - there's plenty to discover right on your doorstep!
Day Six – Eryri National Park (Snowdonia)
Just a few miles away is the beautiful Eryri (Snowdonia National Park. Stopping off at Betws Y Coed along the way, we take the Llanberis pass at the foot of Y Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon), driving through some of the most dramatic scenery in the country.
From here it’s on to Caernarfon. This royal town and port has lots to offer. Lanes feeding off the main square offer independent shops and cafes next to historic pubs and more. All in the backdrop of Edward 1st's imposing Caernarfon Castle.
